Top Five Fish and Chip Shops by the UK Seaside

June 6th is National Fish and Chip day.  But here at Caledonian Travel we know that ANY day is a Fish n’ Chip day.

Who doesn’t love all those Fish and Chip shop smells? You know…the one you get when you walk past the chippy, the one you get from the paper it’s all wrapped up in.  Add salt and vinegar, and the aroma goes up a level.

In fact, we’re drooling right now just by thinking about it...

It’s widely known that Fish and Chips taste better at the British seaside, so we asked the members of the Caledonian Travel Fan Club where their favourite fish and chip shops are when they take a coach holiday with us. And it’s clear that they have some firm favourites.

So, here are five of the best fish and chip shops at the UK seaside, according to Caledonian Travel holidaymakers…

The Magpie Cafe Whitby National Fish and Chip Day

Magpie Café, Whitby

Now, you might have to queue, but people say that it’s worth the wait for fish and chips here.

You can’t miss The Magpie Café on Pier Road in Whitby.  It’s an imposing building that overlooks the harbour, and the team behind the counter pride themselves on serving up prime fresh local fish and seafood.

It’s been a family-run shop since 1954, and it’s open seven days a week. We’ve seen the pictures of what they offer here, and quite simply – their fish and chips look divine!

The Oban Fish and Chip Shop National Fish and Chip Day

The Oban Fish & Chip Shop

“The best fish and chips I’ve ever tasted” exclaimed TV chef Rick Stein about this place. And who are we to argue?  This shop has been open for over 20 years, and some of the staff have been working there since the word go.

Situated on George Street, just a short walk from the promenade and the Marina, The Oban Fish & Chip Shop are winners of a Blue Ribbon in the Good Food awards, and have been voted one of the top three fish and chip shops in the UK by National Geographic.

Eat in or takeaway (takeaway is best, right?) why not check it out for yourselves on your next break to Oban, Scotland?

Northbay Fisheries Scarborough National Fish and Chip Day

North Bay Fisheries, Scarborough

Now, this one set back a little from the North Bay on Columbus Revine in Scarborough. But it's well worth seeking out, because it’s fish and chips are spectacular.

It’s a great chippy to visit when you’re spending the day at the North Beach or Peasholm Park, or if you need some pre-gig nourishment before going to see a concert at Scarborough Open Air Theatre.  On gig nights, you’ll likely have to queue (although it'll go down swiftly) because people make a point of going for food here. But any wait you might have will be worth it, because the food at North Bay Fisheries is delicious.

Takeaway only, expect white flaky fish, perfectly cooked chips, and if you fancy a ‘small’ sized meal be careful – it might be bigger than you think!

NAtional Fish and Chip Day 2024 C Fresh Blackpool

C Fresh, Blackpool

Now, we couldn’t do a top five fish and chip shop write up without Blackpool coming in to the mix, could we?  It seems like there’s a chippy around every corner in Blackpool, and C Fresh is a firm favourite amongst our loyal Blackpool travellers.

In 2016/2017 it was voted the best licenced chippy, and it’s known for being reasonably priced and spotlessly clean. You can find it on the corner of Foxhall Road and Princess Street, very close to the seafront which is just a short walk over the road. Perfect for finding a bench and enjoying the view of the Irish sea.

People say that C Fresh serves up delicious haddock and chips, and do so with a smile!

Sandys Folkestone National Fish and Chip Day

Sandy’s Fish n Chip Shop – Folkstone

In the southeast of England, Folkestone is a lovely part of the world. And, that's where you’ll find the incredible Sandy’s Fish and Chips, on Back Street.

This shop is takeaway only and sits about 30 seconds walk from the beach.  The word is that the fisherman who catches Sandy’s freshly caught fish eats there, and not only do their fish and chips come highly recommended, but people also rave about their curry sauce too!

The owners have over 30 years’ experience in the Fish and Chip industry, so Sandy’s is a must-try on your next coach break in Folkestone!
