Under Starter's Orders: Saddle Up for a Horse Racing Break...

What’s better than a day at the races?  The answer to that question is a short break away with family and friends, with a day at the races included.

If you're looking for a quick break away with fun, excitement and tradition, a horse racing break might be just what you need. Whether you're a seasoned racegoer or if you’ve never had a day at the races before, it’s a unique experience that you’ll be sure to love...

Never been to The Races?

If you haven’t been to the races before, you’re in for a treat. The buzz starts from the moment you arrive at the racecourse, with the place alive with racegoers, all suited, booted and dressed up for the day. With a drink in hand, everyone’s gathered to enjoy the speed, skill, and beauty of the horses.

The atmosphere is quite special, with lots of happy people everywhere – all waiting for the excitement of the first race.

And there’s nothing quite like going to the races with a group of like-minded people, all looking forward to the fun they’re about to have…

What’s the best way to enjoy horseracing?

Our coach breaks to the races are about more than just the races themselves. It's a complete package that promises enjoyment on and off the track. With Caledonian Travel, your travel arrangements, accommodation, tickets and transfers are all included – leaving you to just relax and enjoy the experience.

You start your day with a comfortable coach journey, fellow race enthusiasts are all onboard, and they’re all excited for the day ahead. When you arrive at your racecourse, you'll get some time to explore the venue, take in the sights, and perhaps enjoy a refreshing drink as you soak up the vibe.

Who’ll be racing? After Frankie Dettori’s retirement, the next big names to look out for are Oisin Murphy and Tom Marquand. Maybe you’ll be lucky enough to see them both!

And one of the things people forget about is that each racecourse has its own unique charm. From the historical significance of Haydock Park to the modern grandeur of York Racecourse. These venues aren't just about racing; they offer a glimpse into a rich tradition that has been enjoyed for centuries.

Responsible fun

Of course, for many, a day at the races wouldn't be complete without a small, responsible flutter. While betting adds an extra layer of excitement, the real joy comes from the shared experience—whether you win or lose. The day is about having fun, enjoying the company of friends and family,
and soaking up the vibrant atmosphere.

What’s the jargon?

You know all that Horse Racing language you hear on the TV? What does it all mean? Here are five pieces of horse racing lingo that you probably don’t need to know, but it’s fun to know anyway…

  • Photo finish - A close race finish, requiring the race day judge to consult a photo before declaring the winner or a dead-heat. A photo can also help determine the placings behind the winner.
  • Racecard - A programme giving information about the races scheduled during a race meeting and the horses set to run in them.
  • Nap - A bet considered to be the most likely winner of all bets during the day.
  • Stewards’ inquiry - An inquiry held at the racecourse on a race day after any given race. The panel is advised by the stewards.
  • Going - The underfoot conditions at the racecourse.

What else can I enjoy?

Of course, the thrill of the races themselves are the highlight of the day. Whether you're watching the iconic Grand National, with its unpredictable twists and turns, or the prestigious Cheltenham Gold Cup, every race offers something different. The sight of the horses thundering down the track, the sound of hooves pounding the turf, and the roar of the crowd as they cross the finish line. It’s a unique experience that's hard to beat.

Once the last race has finished, you’ll have time to finish your last drink, before getting back on the coach, and comparing your winnings with everyone else.  You’ll head to your hotel, freshen up, and have dinner.

After snoozing off the previous day’s events, you’ll be taken on an excursion to somewhere close by to enjoy, relax and unwind.  It’ll be a less busy day, but still an enjoyable one – meaning that you’ve not just had a day at the races…you’ve had a weekend away.

A horse racing break with Caledonian Travel offers more than just a day out—it's a chance to be part of something special, to witness the passion and excitement that horse racing brings to so many. So why not join us on one of our packages and experience the thrill for yourself? You'll be glad you did.
