It isn’t just Halloween when ghouls, ghosts, bats, rats and black cats eerily come out to cause the creeps among many who dare to go where others fear to tread. In some parts of the United Kingdom, spooks and spectres roam free in the most unexpected places, and strange occurrences take place in some of the most popular coach break destinations.Have you ever travelled to one of these spookiest spots in the UK with Caledonian Travel…?
The City of York is renowned as one of the most haunted parts of England, with a number of landmarks in the city having their own spooky tales to tell.Over the years, 35 Stonegate has been called York’s most haunted building. It’s a house that originally dates back over 1000 years, and at least 14 different ghosts are said to have appeared within its walls. Lots of people believe that there are many more, some of which were said to be disturbed by renovations in the 1990’s, stirring them from their eternal slumber. And if you fancy a drink, dare you visit the Golden Fleece in York - purportedly England’s most haunted pub. Sightings of apparitions moving through the bar and disappearing into walls, rattling keys, and ice-cold hands stroking people’s backs are all eerie tales that have come out of this establishment over the years.
Over in Liverpool, one of the hotels that Caledonian Travel's passengers enjoy staying in is the Adelphi Hotel. Now, this hotel is the perfect haunt for travellers, but it’s also home to a few ghouls as well. Dare you stay on the third floor…?Paranormal teams have visited the Adelphi Hotel, and have told of hearing a disembodied voice during one stay and some have seen a man called George standing next to their bed in the dead of night. Many who’ve stayed in the Sefton Suite have seen a spine-chilling spectral navy officers in uniform, and there has also been sightings of a figure of a grey woman too...
If you’re with us on a break in Edinburgh, The Real Mary King’s Close is cited as the most haunted location in Scotland. When they lived there, Thomas Coltheart and his family reported that they were almost driven mad by images of disembodied limbs, a formless phantom of a child and the ghost of a gruesome-looking dog that would curl up on a chair. And if that wasn't eerie enough, a well-known Japanese medium made contact with Annie, the little girl ghost of Mary King’s Close. The medium felt a tug on her coat as she left one of the rooms, and as she looked back she saw a small girl crying in the corner. The little girl said she died during the plague in 1645, and the troubled child talked of a doll she had lost...
Whitby is one of the most well-known gothic locations in the world, and the setting for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. But whilst Whitby might be a pleasant, quiet and friendly fishing town by day, it’s known for its many ghostly apparitions by night. It is said that the ghost of St. Hilda, who founded Whitby Abbey is rumoured to roam the Abbey, where she peeks out from one of the highest windows. This ghost also gained fame with her mention in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, but she is not alone in her ghostly haunting. There are more of Whitby’s ghosts found in one of the two lighthouses on its coast. One lighthouse is said to be visited by a one-armed ghost of a man who fell to his death onto the rocks under the lighthouse. The town is also home to the Barguest Hound, which is said to be a 'glowing-eyed hound of hell'. This hound is said to roam the streets, and only those who are going to die soon are able to hear its deathly growl...
The Grand Hotel, Scarborough has a rich history having been built way back in 1867. Our passengers return there year after year. and its walls have seen many famous personalities, including royalty, celebrities, and service members. However, some guests and staff members have reported strange occurrences...They claim to have experienced poltergeist activity in their rooms, such as constant knocking, objects moving independently, and shaking doors. Guests have also reported hearing period music playing in the ballroom, with laughter, and singing. One of the spookier sightings has been an apparition of a lady dressed in a red gown. And more sinister occurrences have also been experienced, such as ear-piercing screams, and footsteps following people down the corridors.
So there we have a little bit about the haunting histories of the UK's spookiest spots. We haven’t heard any of our passengers report any ghoulish activity….yet! Perhaps you’ll be in touch with us next time…
